Night shift at a hotel
So I'm doing my hourly hall check, and when I get to the 3rd floor, there's this lost-looking, aging, oriental man standing in the hallway in his underwear. He says something to me (I think along the lines of how are you? -- it wasn't English), so I continue my rounds and leave him in peace. He slowly creeps downstairs, communicates through gestures that he has to pee. I show him to the staff washroom - and obviously this is what he needed because he's about to start - so I closed the door for him. He comes back to the desk when he's done, and starts talking non-English to me. NO COMMUNICATION here. I ask him if he's locked out of his room and show him a room key (it's a plastic card, he's old, maybe the function is lost on him), he stares at it blankly. He starts telling me about his son who's a pilot... so maybe the old guy just wants to talk? I try to get him back upstairs, he wanders outside (still in underwear and bare feet; the ground is wet from a week of rain). I think quickly and try to get Babelfish to translate a question for me into Korean - Which fails to display the characters. I try Explorer, it prompts me to download the Korean language pack - so I do that, finally I get the question and translation, and he stares blankly at it. Shit. Eventually, I convince him, or he convinces me or whatever to take him back upstairs, and I try to let him in with my master key (they don't work when the room is occupied - who knew?). I leave him and go make him a new key. Open the door for him. He kinda looks into the room curiously (almost like he'd never seen it before...) and I'm praying I've got the right room - there's only one room with oriental guests registered, and this is it... and he seemed to be saying the name on the registration, but his accent was so thick... and he didn't seem helped by the Korean translations -- so I don't really know. Anyway, he goes into the room, looks at the people sleeping and then gives me a gesture that seemed to indicate "thanks, I'm good." Meanwhile, I've just let a dirty old man into some other guests room and I'm gonna lose my job and get the hotel closed down. Fun night.
